Volunteer Librarian Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity to work with us at the Gardens. The Librarian will develop the Gardens’ Library/Information service which serves the Gardens’ horticultural staff and students onsite but is also open to keen gardeners. The Library is normally a reference one for outsiders but there are plans afoot to lend some resources to Members of the Gardens. Resources number some 3000 books and a selection of journals: the Library’s catalogue is provided by the koha Library Management System and is available via the Library’s web page. The work will include enthusiastically promoting the service and a particularly important activity is answering knotty plant-based enquiries whether online, by phone or in person. The Gardens opened in 1832, so the Librarian works closely with the Archivist and reports to the Chief Executive.

The volunteer needs to have experience of library/information work; be IT literate; enjoy and have experience of working with people; be interested in gardening/horticulture/plants. A Library/Information qualification would be an advantage, as would experience in a specialised library.
