Loudon Terrace

Loudon Terrace
Close to the Pavilion is a foxglove tree, Paulownia tomentosa, from China which, in favourable years, delights the early visitor with mauve flowers before the leaves unfold in spring. In a nearby flower bed is a young tree of Betula costata, an uncommon and beautiful species of white stemmed birch, planted on 30th April 1988 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, to commemorate her visit on the completion of a major redevelopment.

Facing south, protected from the northeast wind by the glasshouse range, a shrub border includes many species doubtfully hardy in the Midlands, one or more in flower in almost any month of the year.
