Iris sibirica

Rock Garden

There are irises for almost all occasions and positions in the garden, from Iris pseudachorus the native bog iris, through the almost unreal bearded irises of the herbaceous border to Iris tectorum grown on house roofs in Japan. Iris sibirica is one of the most elegant and longest in cultivation, having been grown since the middle ages. It prefers a damp site near water and if happy will reward you with a long display of tall narrow flower spikes of the most vivid colours. You could contrast its strong vertical shapes with the large leaves of hostas in a lush waterside planting.
