Mahonia x media ‘Charity’
Valued for its bold foliage and striking, deep yellow winter flowers, Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ is best used as a specimen shrub in partial or full shade. It prefers damp, neutral to slightly acid soil. It is a hybrid between M. lomariifolia and M. japonica. If left alone it can end up as a large shrub, but tends to get leggy, so prune hard after flowering to maintain a good shape and healthy growth. Mahonia got its name from Bernard McMahon, an Irish nurseryman who moved to Philadelphia in the 18th Century and later wrote the first book about gardening in the American colonies.
