Primula sieboldii 'Nuretubane'

Pinetum - at foot of hill by fountain

Our native primrose is Primula vulgaris, but primulas and their close relatives come from just about every part of the Northern Hemisphere and show an amazing range of growth forms and habitats. Primula sieboldii is a species from Japan and North East Asia and is fully hardy in our gardens. Its gently creeping habit means it prefers the open soil to pot culture. Many forms have Japanese names reflecting their obsession with breeding variations on the typical magenta flower colour of the wild species long before their introduction to Western gardeners. Primula sieboldii ‘Nuretubane’ is a superb pink form, which can be found near the fountain spreading along a low dry stone wall.
