Gardens Blog August 2019 – Macmillan Garden Officially Open

It’s an exciting month here at the Gardens – and not just because we are fully into holiday season!

We’ve officially opened the Macmillan Garden by Martyn Wilson. The garden, which was on show at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in June at Birmingham’s NEC, has been rebuilt and replanted here for even more visitors to enjoy.

Designed by award-winning Martyn Wilson, the garden, which picked up silver accreditation at Gardeners’ World, is a thought-provoking space, packed with brightly coloured presents that celebrate the idea of leaving a legacy.

If you haven’t visited the Macmillan Garden yet, please do – it’s worth doing so.

You may have enjoyed a break to sunnier climes, but for us, the work to keep the Gardens in tip-top condition continues!

One of our biggest jobs – apart from the continuous weeding to keep the borders neat and tidy – is feeding the plants. Most will now need a high potash (potassium) fertiliser because this encourages new flowers – tomato feed is excellent.

If you are going away this month, move your houseplants into a cool, shady room or in a shady spot outside. Also give them a good soaking of water and they should be fine for a week or so before you get back.
