Birmingham Botanical Gardens is an independent educational charity aiming to offer world class environmental education in a green environment to audiences in all sectors of the community.
ROLE PURPOSE
As a Maintenance Manager, you will play a vital role in maintaining and supporting the future of our Gardens, which are a much-loved part of Birmingham’s landscape and heritage. We are looking for a positive, driven and experienced candidate with a range of skills who can help deliver the core ethos of our charity.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Manage the site and buildings maintenance, including but not limited to maintaining repairs to the gardens and nurseries, waste management, water supplies, drains, lighting, defects and repairs, building work, and decoration
- Work closely with the onsite horticultural teams to keep the gardens at its high standard
- Daily monitoring, prioritising and delegating of jobs to the maintenance team
- Accountable for systems essential to the day to day running of operations;
- Maintain equipment and regular testing is carried out where required
- To be responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of areas
- Carry out work completely, effectively and in a safe manner
- Responding to emergency callouts
- Ensuring all machinery runs smoothly to ensure an efficient operation
- Arrange and monitor external contractors for major repairs or specialised maintenance
- Assess material requirements for specific work requests and if not held in stock report requirements to Head of Operations
- Report observations and recommendations for future maintenance and repair work paying particular attention to issues of Health and Safety
- Budgeting and resource management in line with set KPIS
- Adhere to all Birmingham Botanical Gardens, legal and health and safety procedures at all times.
- Ensure all administration, compliance records, risk assessments are accurately kept and orderly.
- Ensure the working environment is organised, safe and to expected standards at all times.
- Help to create training material for H&S and Fire Safety.
- Ability to diagnose problems and possible solutions for any remedial work required
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Must be able to travel with a located area within Birmingham;
- Good communication and interpersonal skills;
- Full driving licence; preferably manual
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations;
- Can lift 75+ lbs;
- Must pass background check;
- Maintenance relevant multiskilled background (e.g. building, plumbing, electric or carpentry);
- Computer literate (Microsoft software and specific to electrical drawings);
- Troubleshooting of mechanical & electrical system;
- Experience of undertaking repairs and maintenance in a commercial or Heritage environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Office environment, outdoor gardens involving lifting, weekends, late evenings

Salary £30,000 per annum
40 hours a week including weekend and out of hours working
