Coffea arabica (Coffee) is also known as Arabica coffee and can be found in our Tropical House. Native to North East tropical Africa, this well-known plant blooms in spring and summer, and produces fruits in autumn and winter. It is the national flower of Yemen.

Its habitat is humid, evergreen forests.

Coffea arabica from the mountains of Ethiopia offers the best quality coffee beans to be found anywhere in Africa.  Fragrant white flowers produce red berries with 1 or 2 seeds.  The seeds are dried, roasted, then ground and brewed to make one of the most popular hot beverages.  Coffee has stimulatory effects, due to alkaloids, including caffeine and theobromine.
