Leave a legacy to the Gardens
Making a Will is important
Making a Will is the best way to ensure that your family, dependants and any other loved ones will be provided for. It is also an opportunity for you to consider making a charitable gift in support of one or maybe more causes that have meant something to you in your lifetime.
Making a Will is easy
Decide who will write your Will. We recommend using the help of a Solicitor to do this to ensure everything is legal and valid.
If you would like to make a gift to The Gardens in your Will it would be helpful to provide your Solicitor the following information:
- Our Registered Charity Name: “The Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society Limited”
- Our Registered Charity Number: 528981
- Our Registered Charity Address: Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 3TR
Remembering the Birmingham Botanical Gardens
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens receive no ongoing help from local or national government funding. Our annual running costs of over £1.2m are met by our membership subscriptions, entrance charges and enterprise initiatives. All new developments must be paid for through voluntary donations. We need to spend all the money we raise to maintain and develop The Gardens to a high standard as an important amenity and educational facility.
All legacy income is spent on new projects, education facilities and developing the plant collection. In recent years we have been able to expand our education facilities and programme because of the generosity of individuals remembering The Gardens in their Wills.
Our Will-writing partners, Thursfields Solicitors, provide expert advice on Will drafting. Thursfields are pleased to offer supporters of the Botanical Gardens, including members, volunteers, employees and trustees, a discount of 10% discount on all quoted fixed fees (excluding disbursements) for Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney.
If you are interested in making your Wills/LPAs through Thursfields, please email them at email@example.com or phone Ed Jones on 0121 624 4000 (Solihull) or Abigail Wells on 0121 227 3850 (Halesowen). Thursfields have offices across Worcestershire and the West Midlands and will be happy to meet you at any of their offices. Alternatively, they would be happy to hold a ‘surgery’ at the Gardens for a group of people. This would be arranged in conjunction with the Botanical Gardens with individual private pre-booked appointments so that you can make the most of the day.

Shaping the Gardens’ Future
By making a legacy, you can help us expand our education and plant conservation work. A first class library is being developed. Over the next 10 years we hope to extend our facilities by building a new nursery, an Alpine House and a Southern Hemisphere Glasshouse. These will add to the Gardens’ features and help us ensure that they maintain their reputation as a centre of excellence.
What to do
After you have provided for your family and friends, you may have some money that you could leave to The Gardens and we would welcome every gift, large or small. There are two ways in which you can help us:
- A specific bequest – a sum of money or particular possession.
- A residual bequest, which is the amount left when all other bequests have been made.
Your gift will help ensure that The Gardens will be enjoyed for generations to come.
If you would like to know more about The Gardens and how your gift may be used please phone and ask to speak to the Chief Executive.
